Breast Cancer Awareness Everyday, Every Month
With October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, coming to an end it’s important to know as much as possible about the disease throughout the year. At Neighborhood Radiology, we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness, every day and every month of the year. Breast cancer survival rates have increased in recent years as a direct result of early detection and treatment. Find out more about this disease and why it’s crucial to find it early.
Breast Cancer Survival Rates
The rates of breast cancer survival vary depending on how advanced the disease is and how it’s treated. Patients who are diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, such as stage I or II, have a higher survival rate than those who are diagnosed with stage III or stage IV cancer. The 5-year survival rate for breast cancer that has not spread to other areas is roughly 99 percent, while the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer that has spread outside the breast on a limited basis is roughly 85 percent. When cancer cells have spread to other areas in the body, the 5-year survival rate drops to just 26 percent.
Having breast exams done on a regular basis offers an effective way to find breast cancer early. Women who are over 40 years old should undergo mammogram on a routine basis. Women should also have screenings done if they detect any possible signs of breast cancer during a self-exam, such as any lumps or bumps. These self-exams should be conducted once a month.
Benefits of Early Detection
- An improved chance at beating cancer: The earlier breast cancer is detected, the higher your chances are of successfully fighting it. Detecting cancer early provides you with a chance to start receiving the treatment you need in order to beat this disease and prevent it from getting worse.
- Lower risk of metastatic or advanced care: Metastatic cancer occurs when breast cancer cells spread to other areas of your body. Getting treatment early after detecting cancer in its earlier stages significantly reduces your risk of having it become metastatic or reach more advanced stages, which are much more difficult to treat. Advanced cancer stages and metastatic breast cancer cases have much lower survival rates overall.
- More time to make treatment decisions: when breast cancer is found early, this gives you more time to carefully consider all treatment options and make an informed decision on what is best for you.
