Bone Density Scan in Long Island & Queens
What is a bone density scan?
A bone density scan is a diagnostic procedure that measures a patient’s bone density. It is commonly used to identify and measure bone loss, which can indicate certain conditions, like osteoporosis or risk of bone fractures.
At Neighborhood Radiology Services, we provide bone density scans that are performed with the latest, state-of-the-art imaging technology to help prevent or identify certain conditions that relate to bone health.
Why is a bone density scan performed?
Your doctor may recommend a bone density scan for osteoporosis, a vertebral fracture, or other bone conditions that have been suggested by an imaging test (e.g., x-ray, MRI, CT). A bone density scan may also be warranted if you have:
- Other evidence of bone loss (due to medication or another condition)
- A disease or condition that causes low bone density/bone loss
- Type 1 diabetes
- Surpassed 65 years of age (female) or 70 years of age (male)
What does a bone density scan involve?
At Neighborhood Radiology Services, a bone density scan procedure is similar to undergoing a digital x-ray exam. Your doctor will provide detailed instructions for how to prepare for your exam. Patients are comfortable and pain-free during the short test. We use advanced, low-level x-ray beams to scan the area, producing images that help your doctor evaluate the density of your bones.
A good bone density score means that only a few x-rays are able to pass through the bone during the exam. When patients have less dense or weak bones, more x-rays are able to pass through. This results in a low bone density score and indicates a higher susceptibility of suffering from a broken bone.
After the exam, your doctor will go through your results with you, and may make recommendations for further testing or treatment, as needed.
