Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Long Island & Queens
What is a musculoskeletal ultrasound?
A musculoskeletal ultrasound is a specific type of ultrasound exam that creates images of a patient’s tendons, muscles, ligaments, and joints. The exam is non-invasive and uses harmless sound waves to generate images. It can help your doctor diagnose certain conditions that affect the soft tissues in your body. Because the test does not use radiation, it is a safe exam that can be repeated as needed to pinpoint the cause of aches, pains, or other symptoms of soft tissue conditions.
Why is a musculoskeletal ultrasound performed?
Musculoskeletal ultrasound exams are used to help your doctor diagnose any of the following muscle, tendon, or ligament conditions:
- Tears, sprains, or strains
- Fluid collections
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Soft tissue tumors
- Splinters or other foreign bodies in the soft tissue
- Torticollis (twisted neck condition in infants)
What does a musculoskeletal ultrasound involve?
At Neighborhood Radiology Services, we offer musculoskeletal ultrasound exams in-office at our New York imaging centers. When you arrive for your procedure, you will be asked to remove any clothing or jewelry that may get in the way of the exam. Depending on the area being examined, you will either sit, lie down, or stand for the exam.
During the test, your radiologist or technician will apply a special gel to the area and place a small hand-held ultrasound device called a transducer on top of the gel. Then, the transducer is slowly moved around the suspected injury or condition area.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound exams rarely cause discomfort and are usually complete within one hour. After your exam, your radiologist will go over the results with you and answer any questions you might have.
