Stereotactic Biopsy of the Breast in Long Island & Queens
What is a 2D/3D stereotactic breast biopsy?
A stereotactic breast biopsy is a medical procedure that involves using 2D or 3D digital mammography to identify and biopsy a breast abnormality. If your radiologist identifies a suspicious irregularity with a mammography exam, a stereotactic biopsy may be recommended in order to determine whether the abnormality is cancerous and if it will need to be removed.
Why are stereotactic breast biopsies performed?
Typically, a breast biopsy is performed to investigate an abnormality or lump discovered in the breast. Breast abnormalities that may warrant a stereotactic biopsy include:
- A suspicious mass
- Irregular tissue change
- A structural change in breast tissue
- Calcium collections (calcification)
What does a stereotactic biopsy of the breast involve?
A stereotactic breast biopsy can be performed in one office visit at Neighborhood Radiology Services. Usually, you will lie face down on a padded table with your breast positioned through an opening in the table. The table’s padding is adjusted according to your comfort. Alternatively, sometimes the procedure is done while you are seated.
During the procedure, your radiologist will use mammography x-rays to precisely target the abnormal area of breast tissue. Once you are comfortable, your radiologist will use a special camera to take images of your breast. These x-ray images will help your doctor guide a small biopsy needle into the targeted area. Then, your doctor will use the needle to take small samples of the irregular breast tissue for further testing. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
Once the biopsy is completed, the breast sample is sent to a lab to determine if the cells are cancerous. Your doctor will explain your results to you and discuss next steps, as needed.
