Hysterosalpingogram (HSG Test) in Long Island, Queens, & Manhattan
What is a hysterosalpingogram (HSG)?
A hysterosalpingogram, also known as an HSG test, is an x-ray test that is used to take pictures of the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes, as well as the surrounding area. Often, women who are infertile or are having trouble getting pregnant use this test to help detect problems in the reproductive organs that could be preventing pregnancy.
Why is an HSG test performed?
An HSG can be done to diagnose a variety of conditions relating to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and surrounding area. These include:
- Checking for a blocked fallopian tube in a woman who is having trouble getting pregnant
- Identifying problems in the uterus, such as:
- Abnormal shapes
- Foreign objects
- Other abnormalities
- Checking the success of tubal implant surgeries
What does a hysterosalpingogram involve?
An HSG can be performed in-office at Neighborhood Radiology Services by our board-certified radiologists. You will be asked to change into a medical gown before the procedure, and lie on your back on a padded exam table. One of our technicians will ensure that you are comfortable and help to elevate your legs before the procedure.
During the test, your doctor will use a tool called a speculum to see the inside of your vagina and cervix. A contrast medium (injectable dye solution) is used to help make the area visible in x-ray images. A thin tube is gently inserted through your vagina and into your uterus. Then, the contrast medium flows into the uterus and up your fallopian tubes. At the same time, pictures are taken using a stream of x-ray images, which capture the contrast material as it makes its way through the reproductive organs. Any injury or abnormality in the uterus or fallopian tubes will appear clearly in a set of pictures, which are displayed on a high-resolution screen for your doctor to evaluate.
After the exam, your doctor will go over the results with you and discuss next steps.
