What is an MRI guided breast biopsy?

An MRI guided breast biopsy is a type of image-guided biopsy that is performed using MRI imaging, a technique that creates multiple cross-sectional images that are combined to produce detailed, high-quality portrayals of your breast tissue. The use of MRI during the procedure allows your radiologist to determine the exact location of a breast abnormality in order to take samples for testing.

Why is an MRI guided breast biopsy performed?

An MRI guided breast biopsy is generally used to investigate an abnormality or lump in the breast. Your doctor may recommend undergoing an MRI guided breast biopsy at Neighborhood Radiology Services if any of the following irregularities are found in the breast:

  • A suspicious mass
  • Irregular tissue change
  • A structural change
  • Calcium collections (calcification)

What does an MRI guided breast biopsy involve?

During the MRI guided breast biopsy procedure at Neighborhood Radiology Services, you will be asked to lie face-down on a padded table. Your breasts are positioned through openings in the table, and are adjusted to ensure you are comfortable. Before the biopsy, an MRI is conducted to determine the exact position of the breast irregularity. Your doctor will use the images produced by the MRI to guide the biopsy needle to the exact spot that needs to be tested.

During the biopsy procedure, your radiologist will insert a small needle into the breast tissue and remove a tiny tissue sample from the suspicious area. The needle may need to be inserted more than once to obtain a few different samples. This will ensure the most accurate biopsy results and help prevent the need for further testing.

After the sample is extracted, your doctor will clean the area of your skin and place a small bandage over it. The sample will be sent to a lab for examination and to determine whether abnormal cells were identified. Your doctor will go over the results with you and explain next steps, as needed.
