An ultrasound is an imaging technique that is commonly used to help guide your doctor when performing a breast biopsy.

Ultrasound-Guided Core Biopsy of the Breast in Long Island & Queens

What is an ultrasound guided core breast biopsy?

An ultrasound guided core breast biopsy is a diagnostic procedure during which your doctor removes a small amount of breast tissue to be tested for irregularity, such as breast cancer. An ultrasound — which is an imaging method that sends high-frequency sound waves through your body to create sharp, real-time images — helps guide your doctor during the procedure.

I went for a mammogram and sonogram this morning. The women that did the tests were very professional, kind and courteous. I really appreciated Gail, who did the sonogram. It’s not usually a test I want to have done but her friendly and caring manner made all the difference.

Why is an ultrasound-guided core breast biopsy performed?

An ultrasound-guided breast biopsy can be performed at the Forest Hills or Hewlet offices of Neighborhood Radiology Services, and is usually recommended when an irregularity or lump is discovered in breast tissue. The test may also be warranted if any of the following abnormalities are found in the breast:

  • A suspicious mass
  • An irregular tissue change
  • A structural change in breast tissue
  • A calcium collection (calcification)

What does an ultrasound-guided core breast biopsy involve?

At Neighborhood Radiology Services, an ultrasound-guided core biopsy is performed as an in-office procedure. Before the biopsy, you will usually be asked to change into a gown and lie down on a padded exam table. Then, a breast ultrasound will be performed to locate the exact area for the biopsy.

During the biopsy, our radiologists will use a small, hollow needle to remove tiny bits of tissue, known as “cores”, from the area that appears irregular. The needle will usually be inserted a few times to obtain multiple “core” samples. This ensures the most accurate results and helps prevent the need for further testing.

After the procedure, your skin will be cleaned and a small bandage is placed over the biopsied area. Your radiologist will go over the results with you following the test and explain next steps, as needed.
